PICKING THE WRONG SPEAKER FOR YOUR EVENT CAN BE COSTLY.
You have an event coming up and you want to make sure the speaker you hire is a good fit. If you get this wrong, it could be costly. We once booked a highly paid speaker who rocked the stage on the topic of leadership and compassion. Coming offstage he screamed at the parking attendant while picking up his car. What I remember from that day is the embarrassment I felt for all of us who planned the event. Having been on both sides of event planning, I know how important it is to find the right speaker for your event.
I have spent the last 20 years around celebrity speakers. Most have huge egos and are a nightmare to deal with backstage. Why would I tell you this?
I tell you this because it is true.
Some have an entitlement mentality and don’t practice what they share on stage. You have many choices when hiring a speaker. Interview them, listen to their material and go with your instincts.
A speaker should not be relying on slides to get their point across. They should know their material in such a way that they do not have to read slides.
Be sure to ask the speakers you are interviewing what they require when it comes to technology. The last thing you want at your event is a speaker who has technical problems and has to read his slides.
You wouldn’t think I would have to mention this, but I will. You do not want your speaker to be offensive in any way by dividing your audience.
I have seen this behavior on stage from professional speakers. Foul or shocking comments might get people’s attention, but it can backfire on you after the event.
You want your speaker to be an expert and bring you expert advice, but you do not want them to put your audience to sleep.
If you are hiring a motivational business speaker, you want them to deliver content in such a way that they inspire your audience to think differently and to take action.
The last thing you want is a speaker who is so tied to their script that they cannot interact with your audience. Of course you do not want someone that wings it. Neither do you want someone who cannot relate to your audience.
There is a time and a place to hire an amateur, but not for your event. You want someone who has experience and knows what they are doing.
Who you hire is a reflection of you and your team. You want to make sure it is a good fit. Do your best to make sure the speaker you are considering has integrity and will show up on time.
Selecting the right speaker for your event is a process. Do your research. Check out their presence on social media and makes sure that the person you hire has your best interests at heart. Hiring the right speaker for your event can make you and your team superstars. Imagine what it will feel like to avoid these pitfalls and find the right speaker for your event.
